The costotransverse joint block is a minimally invasive technique used for the relief of pain in the thoracic region, especially when it originates from nerves passing near the rib and spinal structures.
Technical procedure
The technique involves targeted injection of a local anesthetic, with or without corticosteroid, near the costotransverse joint (rib–spine articulation).
Therapeutic goal
• Desensitization of nerve branches transmitting pain
• Reduction of inflammation and irritation
• Pain relief
• Improvement of thoracic mobility
Indications
• Chronic thoracic pain
• Pain due to trauma or postoperative syndromes
• Musculoskeletal syndromes related to ribs and spinal structures
Benefits
• Immediate or short-term pain relief
• Improved function and mobility
Clinical approach
In most cases, the procedure is performed using anatomical landmarks or ultrasound guidance. In rare cases, fluoroscopic guidance may be required.
