9. Lumbar Facet Joint Infiltrations (LxFI – Lumbar Facet Infiltration)

Lumbar facet joint infiltration is a minimally invasive technique used for the relief of pain in the lumbar region originating from the small spinal facet joints.

Technical procedure

The technique involves targeted injection of a local anesthetic, with or without corticosteroid, into the lumbar facet joints.

Therapeutic goal

• Reduction of inflammation and joint irritation

• Pain relief

• Improvement of lumbar spine mobility

Indications

• Chronic low back pain related to facet joints

• Spondyloarthropathy

• Postoperative or post-traumatic pain syndromes

Benefits

• Immediate or partially sustained pain relief

• Improved functional capacity

• Minimal transient side effects (e.g. numbness or warmth in the lumbar region)

• Safe technique

Clinical approach

In most cases, the procedure is performed using anatomical landmarks or ultrasound guidance. In rare cases, fluoroscopic guidance may be required.
