17. Transforaminal Epidural Injection (Cervical, Thoracic and Lumbar Spine)

Transforaminal epidural injection is a minimally invasive therapeutic technique used for the management of pain caused by irritation or compression of spinal nerve roots, most commonly due to disc herniation or spinal canal stenosis.

Technical procedure

The method involves the targeted administration of a local anesthetic, often combined with corticosteroid, around the nerve root as it exits the intervertebral foramen.

Therapeutic goal

• Reduction of nerve root inflammation

• Immediate pain relief

• Improvement of neurological function

• Reduction of radicular irritation and symptoms

Indications

• Cervical radicular or lumbosacral radicular pain

• Upper or lower limb radiculopathy

• Neurological symptoms (numbness, muscle weakness)

• Intervertebral disc herniation

• Spinal stenosis

Benefits

• Targeted and effective pain relief

• Improved mobility and function

• Minimally invasive and well-tolerated procedure

Clinical approach

The procedure is performed exclusively under fluoroscopic guidance.
